Springfield-Branson National Airport Master Plan Update
Since Springfield-Branson National Airport’s (SGF) last Master Plan in 2012, the airport has seen significant growth across all aviation sectors, including passenger service, general aviation, cargo, military, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations. To accommodate this growth, SGF enlisted CMT for a Master Plan Update, assessing airport activity projections, regulatory changes, environmental considerations, and future development needs.
CMT evaluated current projections of airport activity, new environmental considerations, and other regulatory factors, while planning for future land uses, facility development, and changes in the aviation environment. The project team determined the maximum capacity and lifespan of the airfield, airspace, airline terminal and associated vehicle parking, general aviation and hangar storage, aircraft parking, and air cargo facilities.
Key findings from the Master Plan Update include:
- Terminal Building: The existing passenger terminal building would not provide sufficient capacity to accommodate proposed passenger levels and larger aircraft anticipated in the future. The plan recommends a “node” expansion at the end of the existing concourse to provide additional space and aircraft gates.
- Public Parking: The existing parking lot was often congested and did not provide adequate stalls within the desired 600-foot radius of the terminal entrance. The plan suggested that SGF conduct a parking feasibility study to evaluate short-term improvements until a parking deck/garage can be constructed.
- Airfield: The plan proposed a 1,000-foot extension of Runway 2. This would make Runway 2/20 equivalent in length to Runway 14/32, providing additional operational efficiency. The plan also advised preserving land for a future parallel runway, strengthening SGF’s long-term competitiveness.
- General Aviation: The plan proposed the establishment of a new southeast Corporate Aviation campus with dedicated landside access and redevelopment of the old passenger terminal area for additional corporate hangars.
- Cargo/MRO: The plan outlines the potential expansion of air cargo facilities to meet future capacity needs. It also recommends developing a new MRO campus.
SGF’s Master Plan Update provides a 20-year roadmap, guiding strategic development through a collaborative, quadrant-based approach. With proactive planning and investment, SGF is positioned for sustained growth and operational excellence.
